When I was young, I fell in love with love.
The notion that one person could welcome all of the mess, the constant flaws and changes of someone else’s soul became the ultimate meaning of life and began the search for my one true soulmate. Who out there would become the other half in Plato’s theory, in the classic Greek mythology story?
“Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and heal the wound of human nature.”
Maybe being an admirer of the whole concept is a little bit cliché, but I believe love exists in every living thing. To me love itself is constant and always worth fighting for. The idea, the movement, the passion of the word. I think soulmates can be best friends who grew up next door their entire lives or 22 year olds who met at an art museum in Italy who were both looking at the same painting.
the definition of a soulmate from Good Will Hunting:
“Someone who challenges you in every way. Who takes you places, opens things up for you. A soul-mate.”
Falling completely in love is one of the scariest things someone can do. If you read that and you don’t believe it, you have never fallen completely in love. To find someone who pushes you, who makes space for you in their world, is the purest form of love to experience. Push and pull, an ever moving growth that aligns the design of who you were, who you are, and who you will become. How do we know when we are ready for the complete form of love, this effervescent ideal to hold our hand?
One of my favorite lines from the movie The Holiday is from Iris:
“You’ll go somewhere new. And you’ll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff — those years of your life that you wasted — that will eventually begin to fade.”
or how about this one:
“I suppose I think about love more than anyone really should. I’m constantly amazed by its sheer power to alter and define our lives.”
Love is more than soulmates, it is the constant feeling of warmth after melting into a hug, or seeing a friend for the first time in weeks or visiting your mom over the holidays. Yes love is difficult, and confusing, but at its very core, it is the complete reason of being. Love makes our soul come back to life. Love convinces us to move states, to drop everything and drive to a house at 2 am. just because. Love convinces you to see yourself as others do. Love is the connecting point between all living things, and certainly deserves every word, every line written about it.
Here are some of my favorite lines spoken about love in films:
“You like because, you love despite.” - Set it Up
“You are lovelier this morning than you have ever been.” - Notting Hill
“I'm so mad at you. I'm really mad at you for what you did. But I'm mad at myself too. Because I should not have jumped out of that car - I should have fought for you. Because you fight for your soul mates.” - Crazy, Stupid, Love
“Who are these women? Does anyone know? I don't recognize any of them. I want to see my best friend's big sister, the girls from the soccer team, my next door neighbor, real women who are smart and pretty and happy to be who they are. These are the women to look up to. Let's put life back into the magazine. And fun and laughter and silliness. I think we all - I think all of us - want to feel something that we've forgotten or turned our backs on because maybe we didn't realize how much we were leaving behind. We need to remember what used to be good. If we don't, we won't recognize it even if it hits us between the eyes.” - 13 Going on 30
“When the sun hits the horizon, I’d get down on one knee. And the rest of the world would fall away. Because it would just be you… because it’s just you… I know this is a far throw from a hidden paradise. But wherever you are in the world, that’s where I belong. Rachel Chu, will you marry me? And make me the happiest man in this world?” - Crazy Rich Asians
“You complete me.” - Jerry Maguire
&
“You had me at hello.” - Jerry Maguire
"Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." - The Princess Bride
“I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” - When Harry Met Sally
"You want the moon? Just say the word, and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down." - It’s a Wonderful Life
"They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and that’s true.” - Big Fish
“It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together … and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home. .. only to no home I’d ever known … I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like … magic.” - Sleepless in Seattle
“You don't know about real loss, 'cause it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself. And I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much.” - Goodwill Hunting
